Six ability scores form the basic description of your character's physical and mental characteristics. Determining your ability scores is the first step to creating a character.

For typical humans with no extraordinary or supernatural talent, ability scores range from 6 to 15, with an overall average of 10. Seasoned adventurers may have ability scores of 20 or even higher. The highest possible ability score for a human without supernatual powers is 30. Ability scores of non-human creatures may be much higher.
Creatures can suffer environmental effects that alter their ability scores on a temporary or permanent basis. For instance, a leg injury might reduce a creature's strength and/or dexterity. If any of a creature's ability scores drop below 1, that creature becomes incapacitated.
The value of each ability score corresponds with a modifier, used whenever you make a check using that ability score or one of its associated skills. The table below lists the modifier values for each ability score.

Regardless of what level character you are creating, you always choose your initial ability scores as though starting at level 0, and then increase them according to your class's table.
To choose your initial ability scores, use the point-buy method. You get a number of points to spend on ability scores based on your race and your age.

After choosing your ability scores for level 0, if your character is starting at a higher level, refer to your class's table to find how many ability score improvements you have.
