Alchemical items are those that are known to have effects when mixed into potions. They can be combined to produce simple or complex magical effects. Every known alchemical item is either a Catalyst, Effect, or Reagent.
The magical effects of these substances only appear in the presence of a magical fuel source, usually aetherium. Every potion begins with a solution of aetherium in one or more forms in water. Otherwise, the mixture will have no effect (and probably won't taste all that good.)
Every potion must have at least one catalyst. These ingredients form the basis of the potion's effect, providing the mechanism of action for other ingredients. For example, a catalyst might make a potion give the drinker resistance to certain magic forms, damage types, or environmental factors. Which ones? Mixing that catalyst with different Effect ingredients determines what specific element the resistance will apply to.
These are substances that show a certain arcane affinity to different objects, creatures, or elements. Comnbining them with a catalyst determines how the catalyst works in the finished product. For example, an effect ingredient may be documented to create effects dealing with fire. Combining it with the example catalyst described above, which provides resistance, would make a potion of resistance to fire (i.e. Burning damage or Pyromancy).
These are ingredients added to an already-usable potion that modify its effect. The most common reagents increase the strength of a single potion's existing effects, or increase the duration of the effect.
