The Torchlight Society classifies magical artifacts based on the level of danger they present to those interacting with them, and to the general public.
A Safe artifact poses no risk of injury, property damage, or exposure of magic to the public at large except in very unusual circumstances.
These items don't pose a risk of serious injury, but can risk damage to property or exposure of magic if used in an improper way.
These items can potentially cause injury or long-term complications to those around them, but are unlikely to if used in accordance with their instructions. They require permission from Society staff for agents to use in the field.
Items in this category pose a danger to people and property unless great care is taken when operating them. They are generally not allowed to be used outside of Torchlight secure facilities.
Society policy dictates that any object that shows signs of sentience or autonomy can't be classified any lower than this category.
These objects carry a significant risk of injury or death even when used properly. The potential for exposure and property damage is significant if the object were to fall into the wrong hands. Due to the potential for these objects to act autonomously, they may require additional security measures to keep their effects contained.
Items in this and higher categories are generally kept only in the Society's top-security artifact storage facilities, like Base 11.
The rare artifact to fall into this category presents an extreme danger not just to those interacting with it directly, but to the Society as a whole or the general public. These items are usually sentient or autonomous and maintaining them in storage requires specialized procedures carried out by trained agents.
These items are always kept in top-security facilities, except in cases where they're impossible to move from where they were discovered.
This theoretical category describes objects so powerful that they require intensive efforts from the Society to prevent exposure. They may be associated with potential doomsday scenarios. To date, no real object has been placed in this category, but the Society maintains procedures for dealing with such threats.
