Artifacting

Artifacting one of the most difficult branches of advanced magic. Practitioners are called Artificers.

Artifacting is the process of creating magical artifacts and the complex enchantments that power them.

Enchantment Components

Complex enchantments are made up of two or more components. Each component is a discrete enchantment, and they work together to achieve the desired effect. Most complex enchantments utilize the school of metamagic to fine-tune the effects they produce.

The creation of a complex enchantment involves deciding which components to use to create the effects you desire. The components of a complex enchantment can be Metamagical components, other enchantments from any school of magic, or spells. Components can be broken down into three major categories:

Crafting Magical Items

A recipe for a magical item consists of a list of enchantments and metamagical components to link them together. As long as you know the list of instructions for an artifact and are able to cast each component, you can reproduce the same artifact. To do so, you must spend time to cast each of its constituent enchantments in the order shown in the instructions. You must have enough time, energy, aetherium, other material ingredients, and the necessary magic skills to successfully perform each step; a failure in any step renders the artifact useless or corrupted.

Artifacts vs. Complex Enchantments

A Complex Enchantment is a collection of components with other spells and enchantments. A collection of enchantments, simple or complex, along with components and spells applied to a specific item is a magical artifact.

When casting a complex enchantment, its components are fused together into a single multi-step enchantment. You must know each component in order to craft such an enchantment, but not to cast it. You'll simply perform each step as a separate spellcasting check. This is in contrast to magical artifacts, which combine multiple components and simple or complex enchantments on an item, and which must all be known by a caster wishing to create such an item.

The Artifacting Process

The process of creating a new artifact or complex enchantment is based on the practice of Spellcraft.
