Complex Enchantments

A Complex Enchantment is an enchantment made up of effects based on one or more Metamagic concepts. These enchantments are highly advanced and difficult to perform, but have nearly limitless possibilities. As opposed to Simple Enchantments, which typically have an ongoing passive effect on an object or the person wearing that object, a complex enchantment has more control over the timing and influence of its effects.

Using metamagical components, complex enchantments are able to only affect specific creatures or types of creatures, activate only when certain conditions are met, and even combine multiple enchantments into a state-based machine with a multitide of uses. These complex enchantments power the most advanced magical artifacts, both discovered in Ancient Ruins and created in modern times.

Casting Complex Enchantments

Casting a complex enchantment requires casting each of its components in sequence. You must succeed on every skill check in order to complete the enchantment on the item. You don't need to know every component individually - knowing the complex enchantment that contains them is enough. The final step in any complex enchantment is the finished enchantment itself. Caution must be taken, as a partial failure of a complex enchantment might create an enchantment with unintended and possibly dangerous effects.

Some, but not all, of the enchantment's components might scale with amplification. Some components might be amplified even at the complex enchantment's base level. In some cases, a complex enchantment might contain a component that's a higher level than the enchantment itself. In these cases, those components' levels are reduced to match the level of the parent enchantment. For example, if a level 4 complex enchantment contains a level 5 component, that component is treated as though it's level 4 when rolling to cast. Its energy cost and any material costs are unchanged.

Creating Complex Enchantments

A practitioner of Spellcraft wishing to create a complex enchantment must know all the necessary components. The GM has the final say in which components are a part of a complex enchantment and at what levels they must be cast. In rare cases, it may be necessary to create a new Metamagic component for a spell. If this is the case, that component must be separately crafted first.

Multiple components and enchantments can be combined with a specific object to create magical artifacts. For more information, see Artifacting.
