Firearms Licenses

The country of Ætheria requires citizens to complete regular training and background checks in order to legally purchase and carry firearms. Depending on the setting of the adventure, your GM might require that your character have a firearms license of a certain level in order to purchase or start with certain weapons.

Obtaining a Firearms License

Certain career backgrounds grant you a class of firearms license. If your background doesn't have one, you can receive one by taking the firearms license general background. If your career background grants you a Class I license, you can upgrade it to Class II without needing to pay for the background's first tier.

The following career backgrounds give you a firearms license:

Background License
Archer Class I
Assassin Class II
Bouncer Class I
Defense Instructor Class II
Detective Class I
Explorer Class I
Gunslinger Class I
Hunter Class II
Military Veteran Class III
Police Officer Class II
Secret Agent Class II
Survivalist Class I

List of Weaponry by Class

You don't have to have the required license in order to use a firearm, but if you don't then you'll be carrying a weapon illegally. Some stores will refuse service to carriers of unlicensed firearms, and if caught you may suffer severe legal consequences. Consult your GM before adding an unlicensed firearm to your starting equipment.

Unrestricted

These ranged weapons don't fall under Ætheria's firearm restrictions.

Class I

Class I firearms are weapons of recreation and self-defense. They're the most common among citizens, but still require regular training to own legally and must be registered. Carrying them in public doesn't usually raise any eyebrows, but it might be concerning to some depending on the weapon and the environment.

Class II

Class II firearms are used in specific professions such as hunting and security. They're the most powerful weapons typically carried by civilians. They're usually only carried on the job, and having them visible in public will likely draw attention to you.

Class III

Class III firearms are weapons of war, such as high-powered automatic assault rifles. These can only be legally owned by military personnel. Carrying them in public is sure to cause a major disturbance.

Class IV

Class IV consists of highly destructive military weapons such as those that use explosive ammunition. They are never legal to own privately and are only operated by active-duty military. Carrying them in public is sure to cause a major disturbance.
