The Torchlight Society recognizes six forms of magic, which are further divided into a total of eighteen Schools.
Each form of magic is tracked as a separate skill and uses a different one of your ability scores in addition to your caster level to create its skill modifier.
Elemental Magic uses your Strength to cast powerful spells by invoking the power of nature and the elements, often with highly destructive results. It is most commonly used in combat, but does have some practical uses.
Divine Magic uses your Constitution to provide magical effects of healing and protection. A strong healer is essential to any adventuring party wishing to survive.
Physical Magic involves altering matter, energy, and the laws of physics. It has many practical uses in adventuring and is the most widely known form of magic. It uses your Dexterity to achieve precise physical alterations.
Psionic Magic is magic that alters the mind and senses. It does not alter the physical world, only one's perception of it. It has many uses in interaction. It requires great Intelligence and is known to be more difficult to learn than most forms.
Spectral Magic uses one's Charisma to deal with the world of spirits and the afterlife. Within organizations like Torchlight, it is often feared and frowned upon. Despite this, it has been proven to have practical and even life-saving applications.
Temporal Magic interacts with space and time to allow effects such as teleportation and manipulation of time. It requires great Wisdom and spatial awareness. It was discovered more recently than the other forms, and is therefore less researched and highly regulated.
Metamagic deals with spells that affect other spells. While it is not officially recognized as a form of magic, it has long been argued that it should be. It can only be mastered by Scholars of advanced magic.
