Grappling is the act of grabbing hold of another creature in order to restrict its movement. The act of grappling a creature is a type of melee attack, and is also an Athletics specialty skill.
Grappling is a type of melee attack. You reach out and attempt to grab hold of another creature to restrain it. You must have at least one free hand, and the target must be within your reach and no more than 2 Size points larger than you.
Make a Grapple (Athletics) skill check against the target's Passive Agility. The target may respond as they could to any attack; if they respond by Dodging or Blocking, the outcome of that check contests your Grapple check instead. You have disadvantage if the target of the grapple is larger than you.
On a success, the target gains the Grappled status effect. On a failure, the attack misses. On a critical failure, the target may gain an attack of opportunity.
You may release a grappled creature at any time.
You attempt to escape from a grapple or restraint. You may attempt either an Agility skill check to slip out of your assailant's grasp, or a Strength check to escape by sheer force. Both checks contest the grappler's Athletics check.
On a success, the Grappled status effect is cleared. On a critical success, you take only one frame to escape. On a critical failure, you take bludgeoning damage equal to 1d6 plus the grappler's size modifier as you injure yourself in your attempt.
You can move while dragging or carrying a grappled creature. You move at half your speed, unless the creature is 3 or more Size points smaller than you.
You may not jump, crawl, or climb while grappling a creature.
