Every item has a condition, which measures its overall quality. The condition of an item can be improved by crafting, and it can be degraded if the item is misused or becomes damaged. Items in poor condition may suffer penalties to their effectiveness according to the Item Conditions table. If the condition of an item drops below 1 (Damaged), the item breaks and can no longer be used for its normal purpose.
An item's condition deteriorates as the result of a failed durability check, based on the item's Durability rating.
Examples of circumstances that call for a durability check:
A brand new item made with impeccable craftsmanship and attention to the most minute detail. Not all materials can have this condition.
An item in good condition, but not flawless. Most new weapons and armor have this condition.
An item that has seen use for its intended purpose and shows normal signs of wear, but still works for its intended purpose without issue.
Items in this condition have been heavily used and suffered wear and tear. Items in this condition have slightly reduced capabilities.
Items in this condition have been misused or very heavily used, or have been damaged in some way. Damaged items barely function, and have severely reduced capabilities.
Items in this state are damaged beyond repair. They can only be salvaged for their material components and do not serve their intended purpose. Any check made using a broken tool or weapon automatically fails.
