The process of learning a new spell can be difficult for inexperienced casters. Spells are written and learned in Tolgethic, an ancient cryptic language that can only be interpreted by the subconscious. While trainers may be able to provide new mages with general information and tips to improve their spellcasting techniques, it is not possible to teach a specific spell to another person without the use of its Tolgethic script.
Each class gains Spellcasting at a certain level. Depending on your character and the setting of the campaign, the GM may require you to complete the process of learning and casting your first spell in-game. Your Caster Level remains at 0 until you have successfully learned and cast a spell. After that, it increases according to your class table. Each class gains new spells through the Spell Studies class feature at various levels. Additional spells found in the world through spell scripts must be learned through the process below.
The first spell is the hardest! When you begin your journey into becoming a mage, you must first train yourself to enter the semi-conscious state of mind required for interpreting spells through meditation. Once this is achieved, you must read the spell's script and commit it to subconscious memory.
The first time you successfully do this, your Caster Level increases from 0 to the value shown on your class table for your current level. This is known as Unlocking your magical abilities.
Each time you learn a spell from a script, if its base level is higher than your current skill level in its form of magic, roll a Spellcasting skill check using only your caster level as a modifier. The difficulty of this check is 20, minus 5 for each additional spell you knew (other than the one you just learned) in that form of magic that's higher than your current skill level. On a success, your skill level for that form of magic increases by 1.
For example, if you're skill level 2 in Psionic Magic and you successfully learn the level 3 spell Blinding Flash, you'll roll a difficulty 20 Spellcasting check. On a success your Psionic skill level would increase to 3. On a failure, the next time you learn a level 3 or higher spell, the difficulty of the check would be reduced to 15 because you already knew one other higher-leveled spell. If you already knew four or more higher-leveled spells, the difficulty would be reduced to 0 and automatically succeed.
You spend one hour meditating to relax your mind into the semi-conscious state necessary for memorizing Tolgethic scripts. Make an difficulty 13 Intelligence or Wisdom ability check. You must be in a quiet and calm environment. External stimuli that break your concentration cause you to fail the check.
Success: | You become Semi-Conscious for up to one hour. The result your roll becomes your Meditation Level until the effect ends. |
Critical Success: | You become Semi-Conscious for up to one hour, the outcome of the check becomes your Meditation Level until the effect ends, and you have advantage on all Learn Spell checks made until the effect ends. |
Failure: | You aren't able to fully relax. You may attempt this action again after one hour. If your meditation was interrupted, you may try it again immediately. |
Critical Failure: | You aren't able to relax at all. You cannot attempt this check again for one day. |
You attempt to learn a spell or enchantment from a complete and clearly legible script you can see. You must be Semi-Conscious.
Make a skill check in the spell's form of magic. You can replace the outcome of the check with your current Meditation Level if it's higher. The difficulty is 10 for a common spell, 15 for an uncommon spell, 20 for a rare spell, and 25 for a legendary or higher spell.
Learning a Cantrip takes 10 minutes, a standard or concentrated spell takes 20 minutes, a ritual spell takes 30 minutes, and an enchantment takes one hour. You automatically fail if your concentration is broken.
Success: | The spell becomes committed to your subconscious memory. Add it to your Spell List. |
Failure: | You fail to learn the spell after spending the necessary amount of time. You may attempt to learn it again immediately. |
Critical Failure: | You fail to learn the spell and you jar yourself out of your semi-conscious state. You must Meditate again before attempting to learn any more spells. |
