Material Spells

Most spells are straightforward to cast, once you've mastered the art of meditation and learning spells in the first place. The vast majority of simple spells draw on your energy to power their effects, but some more advanced spells with long-lasting effects, as well as most enchantments, require additional fuel in the form of physical materials. These spells have the Material keyword.

Material Costs

Spells with the Material keyword and all enchantments have a list of materials required to cast them. These materials must be in your inventory during the spellcasting process and are consumed when the spell is successfully cast (if you fail to cast the spell, the energy spent on it is lost but any materials remain.) If you have an Alchemist's Pouch with available charges, you can choose to use it to satisfy the material costs of a spell at the time it's cast. The charge isn't expended if the cast is unsuccessful.

Aetherium

Main Page: Aetherium

Aetherium, the concentrated form of magical energy given physical form, is a common fuel source for material spells. It is found in a number of different forms with varying levels of energy density.

An enchantment can't be cast using a less powerful form of aetherium than the one it requires, but it can be cast using a more powerful form, which causes it to be amplified.

Alchemical Materials

Main Page: Alchemical Items

Many different natural and artificial substances have been documented to exhibit magical properties when combined with a creature's energy or aetherium. These materials are used in alchemy to create potions with varying effects, and are also used to fine-tune the energy surrounding enchantments and spells.

The material requirements of spells and enchantments generally involve alchemical materials that facilitate similar effects in potions.
