Progression Modes

The progression mode of a campaign determines how the GM tracks character progression, and when player characters level up. This is a choice made by the GM at the start of a campaign that should be communicated to the players. There are four common choices for tracking progress. Changing the progression mode in the middle of a campaign is typically not recommended.

Individual Progression: Each player character earns character points of their own accord by defeating monsters and overcoming other challenges. Characters level up individually according to the leveling table. Members of the same party may be different levels. If a new character joins mid-campaign, they start at the CPT threshold of the lowest level in the party at the time.

Group Progression: The GM always awards the same amount of character points to each player when the party wins in combat or overcomes obstacles. All party members level up at the same time. If a new character joins mid-campaign, their CPT is the same as the rest of the party.

Milestone Progression: The GM doesn't track character point awards. Instead, the party levels up at specific milestones in the adventure, at the GM's discretion. During a level-up, each party member receives character points equal to the amount needed for them to reach the next level.

One-Shot Mode: In very short campaigns, such as single-sessions, there may be no progression at all; players must use their initial points and abilities wisely.
