A ranged weapon is any weapon capable of dealing damage to a target outside the user's normal reach. Most ranged weapons do this by firing a projectile at the target, while others are meant to be thrown.
A firearm is any ranged weapon that fires a projectile using the force of an explosive cartridge. Firearms typically make a very loud noise when fired, making them impractical for covert usage.
All ranged weapons that use projectiles expend the projectile when fired. Different types of ranged weapon use different ammunition, which must be reloaded in order to fire the weapon again. You may be able to improvise ammunition for some ranged weapons, but firearms cannot be loaded with anything but the proper size of ammunition or they will become damaged.
Firearms that use an ammunition clip can fire multiple times between reloads, and reload an entire clip in a single action. Firearms that don't use clips must be reloaded one by one, which can take a very long time. In fast-paced combat situations, switching to a different weapon is almost always faster than reloading.
You don't need to keep track of how many ammunition clips you have on-hand, or how many are loaded or unloaded. When you reload a weapon with a clip, simply refill the clip to its capacity and subtract that many units of ammunition from your inventory. For clip reload (3 frame) weapons, you may fill the clip partially only if you don't have enough ammunition to fill it completely. For single load weapons, you choose how many frames to spend reloading and can stop at any time.
The country of Ætheria imposes restrictions on the purchase and use of firearms. If you're starting in Ætheria or another civilized nation, you might need to have a firearms license in order to carry these weapons legally. Consult your GM before adding an unlicensed firearm to your starting equipment. Some stores may refuse service to those carrying illegal weapons, and if caught you may suffer legal consequences.
