Ver. 1.3.1

Specialties

Specialties are a subset of your skills that represent more specific areas of expertise a character has focused on. Each specialty has a value of at least 1 and is categorized under one of your skills. When attempting a skill check that uses your specialty, add its level to the outcome of the skill check.

Example: A character with an Athletics skill modifier of +4 and a Sprint specialty of 2 would have a total modifier of +6 for Athletics checks involving sprinting.

Gaining Specialties

There are a number of ways to gain and improve specialties. Many Backgrounds give a character one or more specialties based on their past careers. Your class may also grant you additional specialties, and other feats you purchase may also include a new specialty.

To increase the value of your existing specialties, spend character points on the Specialty Improvement upgrade feat.

Cornerstone Actions

In general, specialties apply to a specific action listed beneath a skill. However, some actions can't be gained as specialties because they are the primary focus of the skill itself and anyone with experience in the skill would be expected to specialize in those actions.

The following actions explicitly can't be specialized in: Dodge (Agility), Lie (Deception), Block (Defense), Sense Motive (Insight), Sense Danger (Instinct), Coerce (Intimidation), Reason (Logic), Shoot (Marksmanship), Search (Perception), Perform (Performance), Sneak (Stealth), All Attack actions

List of Common Specialties

See each of the Skills pages for a list of actions and specialties related to that skill. You may gain specialties through Backgrounds.
