Spell Rarity

Spells in the CASPER database are categorized by their Availability or Rarity. This determines which mages are allowed to access the spell as part of their Spell Study Guide, how difficult the spell is to learn, and how frequently the spell is found in ancient ruins.

Note that a spell's rarity is independent of its level - while rarer spells do tend to be higher-leveled, there are many exceptions.

Common

Common spells are the most well-known and openly accessible to all Torchlight mages through the CASPER database. They are also very frequently found on spell scripts in ancient ruins.

Spell Studies: Common spells are widely available on the study guides. Classes with training in a school of magic start learning common spells early on. Some classes can learn common spells from any school of magic.

Uncommon

Uncommon spells are more difficult to learn, and tend to be reserved for mages who have advanced beyond the basics of spellcasting. Their scripts can be found in ruins, but they are harder to find and tend to be used by more powerful enemies.

Spell Studies: Uncommon spells start to appear on the study guides at low-to-medium caster levels depending on your class. Some classes can learn uncommon spells of any school outside their training at high levels.

Rare

Rare spells are only taught to advanced mages. They are notably difficult to learn and memorize properly, and not all mages are capable of learning them. Finding these spells in use in ruins is a rare sight.

Spell Studies: Rare spells appear at medium-to-high levels on the study guides. At very high levels, advanced magic classes can learn Rare spells outside of their training, but most classes can only learn Rare spells within their training.

Legendary

These most complex and powerful spells can only be learned by the most highly advanced spellcasters, though knowledge of their existence is still made available to the greater Torchlight Society. They may have only been found once in ruins to be recorded in the database, and their records may not be complete.

Spell Studies: Legendary spells are only available on the highest levels of the spell study guides. Not all classes have access to them, and they can only be learned by classes with training in their respective schools at high levels.

Restricted

Some spells are considered potentially dangerous by Torchlight, and are only taught to those who specifically choose to practice those types of magic. These "restricted" spells are known across the society, but are only taught on a need-to-know basis.

Spell Studies: Restricted spells can only be learned from the study guides if your class has specific training in a restricted school of magic. Study guides that teach "spells of any type" don't contain restricted spells.

Classified

Only the highest-ranking Torchlight officials know of these spells' existence. They are considered highly dangerous, as little research has been done to document them. They are only ever taught to highly-advanced mages who have demonstrated outstanding abilities and loyalty to the society.

Spell Studies: Classified spells can only be learned through training via special class features of certain classes at high levels, or found in ruins as spell scripts.

Mystery

Spells in this category have not been documented or discovered by Torchlight and can't be found in their database.

Spell Studies: Mystery spells are never found on study guides. They can only be learned from scripts found in ruins or other magical sites.

Innate

This type of spell comes naturally, but only to certain mages. They can't be written down or learned through normal means. They are usually a part of an innate special ability the caster has gained.

Spell Studies: Innate spells are learned as part of a class feature or feat and cannot be learned any other way. They do not appear on study guides and can't be found on scripts.
