Main Page: Status Effects
Overexposure to continuous magical effects can lead to what New Era mages call Spellsickness. This progressively weakening illness is caused by long-term exposure to extremely powerful magic, usually enchantments.
The Spellsick status effect can have any level. Spellsick creatures have disadvantage on all spellcasting checks and take a -X penalty to Intelligence and Wisdom, where X is the creature's Spellsickness level. If Spellsickness leads a creature to have a net Intelligence or Wisdom modifier of -5 or lower, they may act insane.
A creature is Spellsick whenever the combined levels of all enchantments affecting the creature directly exceeds its magic tolerance. A creature's magic tolerance is equal to its overall level, but no less than 5. The creature's Spellsickness level is equal to the difference between the current total of worn enchantments and the creature's magic tolerance.
Only enchantments that affect the creature directly count against its magic tolerance. These include enchantments on worn items, as well as any hexes cast on the creature.
The following effects do NOT count against a creature's magic tolerance:
The only counter to Spellsickness is for a creature to increase its magic tolerance or remove the excessively powerful enchantments causing the illness. The effects of spellsickness persist for 1 hour after the enchantments are removed.
