This step will cover your character learning to use magic! Only do this step if you gained the Spellcasting feature from your class while leveling up, and your GM has allowed the party to begin using magic.
Your Caster Level is a skill value that determines your overall knowledge of magic. It's determined by your class table and ranges from 0 to 10. All classes have access to magic, but some learn it at a later level than others. If you're still classless, then your caster level is 0. If you have multiple classes, choose whichever class's caster level is higher.
A character must have a caster level greater than zero in order to use magic at all. Although magical energy is found in every living being, it takes knowledge and practice to unlock that power. If your character starts with a caster level of 0, it doesn't mean they can't know about the existence of magic - simply that they have not unlocked the power to cast spells themselves.
There are six magic skills on page 3 of your character sheet, representing the six forms of magic. Each different form of magic uses a different one of your six ability scores as the source of its power.
* These forms of magic are not widely known, especially to new mages. Do not add any points to these two forms without the approval of your GM.
Each class has different Magic Training which encompasses different forms of magic. When you receive the spellcasting class feature, you can assign starting values to the magic skills that are part of your class's Magic Training. Your class determines how many points you have to assign, and which forms of magic you can assign them to. You can put a maximum of 3 points into any single form when you first receive Spellcasting. After that, you can improve your magic skills using any of the same methods as your basic skills, such as the Skill Improvement general feat.
Magic Skill Modifiers: The modifiers for each of your magic skills are each equal to your Caster Level plus the Ability Score modifier that form of magic uses. The skill level itself is not factored in, but determines the difficulty of casting spells in that form. See Spellcasting for more.
Whenever you gain the Spellcasting or Spell Studies class features, you can choose a number of spells to learn. Refer to the Spell Study Guide for lists of available spells for your class at each level of study.
You've now finished creating your leveled character, and you're ready to play! Be sure to ask your GM if you have any questions about your character build.
